Walls Quarry, Brimscombe

Smack bang in the middle of the picture is The Yew Tree. It was built in 1552 and added to in 1669. It was a clothier's meeting house and then an ale house. In Victorian times it was a Public House, but closed in 1978 when the present owners - Graham and Liz Peters bought it. In 1991, having been a Tea Rooms, the owners converted part of it to a bed and Breakfast and in 1995 a Holiday Cottage. We have a website - www.theyewtreestroud.co.uk so if you'd like to book for B&B or self-catering just complete the form. Although the picture was taken during the summer, the area is very pretty in the autumn, the changing leaves; winter landscapes and spring flowers are just as spectacular. The area abounds wth lovely walks and the Cotswold Canals are in the throes of being restored. Brimscombe Port, which is just the down the hill from The Yew Tree, was once the biggest inland port. The large Severn trows unloaded their cargoes and were transferred into Thames barges in the basin.
